PREP4BLUE Knowledge Transfer Methodology

To foster the uptake and application of knowledge, contributing towards the ambitious objectives and targets of the ‘Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters’ (Mission), PREP4BLUE applied a systematic Knowledge Transfer (KT) Methodology, developed by Work Package 4 Leader ERINN Innovation (Ireland) over the past 15 years. The Methodology is comprised of three main steps: Collection, Analysis, Transfer:

Collection involves the identification and capture of knowledge, in this case from EU funded R&D&I projects. Through interviews with Knowledge Owners (e.g., project coordinators), key actionable units of knowledge called ‘Knowledge Outputs’ (KOs) are identified and described concisely.

Analysis aims to build understanding of the actors, timelines, priorities etc. that can facilitate impact. Domain experts participate in a meeting to discuss the knowledge and its applications. Leveraging these insights, a ‘Pathway to Impact’ is developed for KOs identified as high potential for Mission objectives and targets. This elaborates the steps needed to enable take-up and application of the knowledge.

Transfer involves carrying out targeted actions as per a specific Plan designed bring the knowledge to the right person so that they can move it forward, along the ‘Pathway to Impact’. A range of different activities may need to occur to support application of the knowledge including brokerage meetings, sharing of assets such as infographics or factsheets, further piloting/validation of the results etc.

PREP4BLUE is using the Methodology to capture, analyse and transfer knowledge in support of Mission objectives and targets. The Methodology was adapted to the Mission through the use of an Analysis Criteria with underlying indicators that support the identification of knowledge sources, the prioritisation of high potential knowledge and the implementation of the most efficient ‘Pathway to Impact’. The criteria assess: Suitability/fit to the Mission (contribution to target impacts), Application and impact potential by 2030, and External factors and other considerations.

Transfer is leveraged through a Knowledge Transfer Online Showcasing Module (KTOSM) on P4B’s WaveLinks application, which matches potential Stakeholders to Solutions in line with the Mission ontology.

The Methodology, could be used by Mission funded projects, but also organisations who develop Mission relevant solutions to align their exploitation activities with the Mission.

Further information on how the methodology is being applied in the context of the Mission can be found in PREP4BLUE D4.2. A demonstration of the KTOSM can be found here
